If you’ve ever been in a situation where you caught yourself taking something personal but didn’t know how to shift your mindset (this can be true for many getting started as a network marketer), this guide is for you.

After reading this guide I hope you will learn how to STOP it – how to stop taking things personal.

When doing business as a network marketer it is inevitable to experience people sign up and then not long after they cancel their membership. Without say, there is a LOT I learned having gone through all that.

Now that I have the posture of an alpha, I created this guide with 3 things to keep in mind and help you learn how to stop taking things personal. If you choose to be affected by someone else’s opinion or action/inaction, life will be miserable and stressful. ‘Nuf said, let’s get into it…

Here are 3 Things to Keep in Mind

→ It’s not all about you.

“If he really likes me then why did he sign up with her and not me; I’ve answered every question they wanted to know about the company but they still chose not to sign up with me; they knew I prepared their favorite dish, I can’t believe they cancelled the presentation tonight on me; if he was truly honest he would’ve told me he wasn’t able to afford signing up for the monthly auto ship.”

Did you notice a pattern in all these scenarios? The word “me”. Now, let’s look at some other pieces that will prove why this really isn’t all about you:

• Mom has always been so loving and supportive… “isn’t that about me?”
• The cashier at the store smiled at you because she is having a really great day… “isn’t that about me?”
  
• Your best friend always remembers your birthday… “isn’t that about me?”
  

You might be saying “I see where you’re going with this, Jaclyn.” Excellent…you’re getting it! When someone says yes or no in signing up with you, or if they say/don’t say something about you, it’s about THEM, not you. You got it!

So my good friend, my sister, my neighbor, and the lady I met at the dentist signed up and cancelled their membership because they didn’t care for the products, they signed up just to show me support, and they cancelled because they didn’t like the idea of autoship. It wasn’t because of me. It was because of them.

You see? It isn’t personal and it really isn’t all about you. I mean that in a good sense of course .

From now on, when ever you catch yourself saying “I can’t believe they did that to me”, get conscious about the fact that you’re using “me” about some other person’s actions.

→ People are busy.

What kind of activities, projects, tasks, events, parties, fundraisers, family time, volunteer assignments, webinars, personal commitments, etc. do you have going on in your calender for the next 7 days?

When Jane doesn’t show up to your presentation (yet again), think about what she might have going on instead of reacting resentful about it and taking it personal. Maybe she had a medical issue or family emergency. She probably forgot that she made another appointment at the same time of your presentation.

Did that ever happen to you? OR, did you ever think, maybe, just maybe she just doesn’t have the time (or doesn’t wanna sacrifice one-hour) to listen to your presentation about vitamins because her family comes first and she needs to prepare dinner for them? Maybe she’s too embarrassed to tell you that she doesn’t care for your opportunity or products. (We as network marketers have to be willing to go through some reality checks such as these.)

The rule of thumb is that each time you find yourself taking something personal, think of a positive possibility instead of a negative one pointing back to yourself. Doing that alone will change your emotions about the entire scenario.

Think about it. Don’t react to what other people are doing with their lives.

→ Some Will. Some Won’t. So What? Someone’s Waiting.

(The 4 SW’s) There’s no law that says everyone has to love what you are about or like what you have to offer. No one is required to care about what you plan to contribute to the world. 

The good news is you will have some people that care and love what you can teach them. Some will love you for it, encourage & support you, and will want more of what you suggest/recommend. Some won’t. Some will shrug their shoulders and say so what, “good luck”. And then there’s always that someone waiting…

Waiting for you to come and save them from drowning in their financial mess.  As a matter of fact there will be (if there isn’t one already) a line of people waiting and you’re gonna have to turn some of them away because of time limitations.

General Thoughts on Taking Things Personal…

• Realize that you don’t need anyone’s approval. Just because someone is not happy with you doesn’t necessarily mean you did something wrong. In majority of cases, it means that person isn’t happy with their life and expects to feel better by making you feel lower than they are. 
• Shift your focused attention. Shift your attention from how you feel, to what kind of person you’re dealing with. Maybe they’re emotionally insecure, or they have poor communication skills, or maybe they’re just flat out mean (What kind of person are they, how do they generally treat others?)
• Get enough shut eye and fuel your body with good food. When you’re tired or hungry you tend to get more sensitive (aka cranky/on the edge). Self-explanatory right?!

Jim Rohn, one of my favorite mentors of ALL time once said, “If you can’t change your friends, change your friends.”

Over the weekend I watched Despicable Me…again. It was probably my 7^th time watching it since it came out almost a year ago. (One of my favorite things to do is watch movies that make me cry or have happy endings.)

In the movie, the criminal mastermind, Gru (voice of Steve Carell) had this plan since his childhood days to steal the moon. His mother (voice of Julie Andrews) continually discourages him since the day he shared the idea with her. Watch these 3 short clips before reading the rest of this post and watch what I’m talking about.

This first clip is the first time Gru shared the idea with his mom about stealing the moon. (18 seconds)

These are all the times he shared his dream with his mom. (24 seconds)

And this is when he is on the verge of creating that dream into reality. Notice how his mom was “congratulating” him for stealing the pyramid. She was actually being sarcastic because she just learned that Vector (Gru’s opponent/rival) accomplished a successful goal – stealing the pyramid from Egypt. (34 seconds)

How sad was that!!

If you have people in your life (I’ll call them ‘friends’) that tell you “ehh”, “you can’t do it”, “it’s just not possible”, or “if it really works then why isn’t everyone rich or doing it?” I’ve got a news flash for you: There will always be people that want to bring you down, keep you down, blow you down, whatever you wanna call it, but it’s up to you to WANT it more than the average mindset.

“Friends” are more comfortable with staying where they are at. So, instead of rising above and beyond and getting uncomfortable going after their true goals it’s simpler for them say “give up and quit” or “it can’t be done” to your face. And instead of encouraging and inspiring you to aim for the target they ultimately break you down.

When you end up becoming big in life, it never fails in that the “friend” that couldn’t do it tries to drag you down with them. The reason they unplug on your dreams and hopes is because they know the day you make it to the top is the day you figure out that they are the loser, and you are (and have always been) the warrior and winner.

Those kind of friends don’t do well with change. I know people whose dreams have been ripped apart because a “friend” believed they couldn’t make it.

Because you are reading this post right now I KNOW what type of person you are. You don’t settle for less. You don’t want the status quo. You want the greater things in life. You are going somewhere, you are making things happen, and you’re going to get there – where ever that place is for you.

Jim Rohn set it best and I”ll say it again: “If you can’t change your friends, change your friends.” That quote right there says it all! (Read that again.)

Settling for less is not the answer. Going for what you’re after is. In the end, it will be you with a ton of friends that want to see success be a part of your life.

If you let the opinion of those “friends” determine or influence your decisions, I promise you will go nowhere real fast. If they don’t have what you want, why would you care what they say or think? The solution for this problem is to associate yourself with like-minded people. People with the same goals, hopes, and lifestyle that YOU are after.

If you have a hunger for a life that is filled with living your passion and has lots of room for freedom, there is a requirement: Action. Action to…

• Change your friends (who you closely associate yourself with)
• Change your lifestyle (the way you live in your abilities, values, and standards)
• Change the way you think (mindset/perspective/attitude)
• Change your daily routines (add and remove the good and the ugly parts – eat healthier, move your body more, etc,…)
  

Allowing other people (yes, that includes your mom and family and friends) to discourage you and shoot down your idea of living a life filled with choices means you are settling for less than you deserve. Instead of lowering your standards, my suggestion is to learn how to make the change that will drive you closer to your goal and then demand yourself to take action on accomplishing it.

It’s simpler than you think. Here’s something I want you to think about and then go and make your change. “If you’re not at the level you want to be at, it’s wrong. If you’re not at the level you’re proud of, it’s wrong. Because you deserve to have it right, to be at the level you deserve. Living on the edge of what is possible. Living life at that level of fulfillment.” -Tony Robbins

This only happens when you start the change you want to live in. Whether that means you will need to change your friends is your call, your story.

Does internet marketing present itself as overwhelming instead of rewarding for you? Oftentimes (especially for those just getting started) it makes you wanna pull your hair out! Maybe you know someone that describes themselves as constantly feeling a lot of overwhelm in their internet marketing adventure. Stick with me to answer 4 questions that’ll help defeat this “side-effect” of internet marketing overwhelm.

Almost everyone that I’ve spoken to in the internet marketing industry has shared the same story with me over and over again. So, know that you are not the only one feeling this way. They shared why they are experiencing overwhelm. Here are the most common reasons:

• Don’t know which way to turn next
• Frustrated and confused who to listen to for advice
• Which marketing method to learn next
• Which specific marketing strategy to focus on
  
• What courses/books to buy
• Who’s the best person to learn xyz strategy from
• …the list goes on, and on, and on.

Absence of focus, inefficient, disorganized, paralyzed, unproductive, and indecisive are some of the results created from being overwhelmed. This rinse and repeat cycle (which seems never-ending) is the perfect formula for zero progress. At the end of the day, this only adds to the overwhelm.

When I first got started in 2009 (read my story here) I was so excited and enthusiastic to learn it ALL. The choices and opportunities seemed endless:

• Video marketing
• Blogging
• SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  
• PPC (pay per click marketing)
• Article marketing
• Phone recruiting
  
• Post cards
• Banner ads
• Social media marketing
• Forum marketing
• Recommended courses
• Live events
• Networking
• …and tons more!

Speaking from experience I can say that it’s so easy to get caught up trying to do everything, be everything, learn everything, or in some cases even be like someone else (what was I thinking!). When you walk towards that direction, you lose sight of discovering what your point of focus truly is.

We are unclear about what we wanna focus on (most especially when getting started in internet marketing) so we tend to over-commit to all the different moving parts of the game.

Now, let’s go over the 4 questions to help defeat and identify why you are experiencing overwhelm in internet marketing.  I wanna get you out of the box of frustration, overwhelm, and stuck!

Defeat Internet Marketing Overwhelm with These 4 Questions

First, grab a sheet of paper and list down everything in internet marketing that you are currently involved in (marketing methods/strategies, businesses, business ideas, etc). Next, circle or put a check mark those on the list that are making you money.

1. Which one on this list has the BIGGEST long term potential to make you an income?

2. Out of everything on this list, which business, method, or idea drives the most passion out of you?

3. If you focused 100% on just ONE business or marketing method, how many weeks or months do you figure it would take you to get really well at it?

Consider all of  the traffic generation strategies out there and then identify which one you are going to be exclusive to. Dedicate yourself to learning everything there is to know about it.

4. What traffic generation strategy will you commit to? Write that specific strategy down.

Other tips to defeat internet marketing overwhelm:

• Stick to the money-making strategy for a minimum of 6 months before moving on to learning a new strategy or business idea.
  
• Unsubscribe from all emails that have nothing to do with your marketing strategy. Go to my post Command Your Inbox Down to Zero to help you get started with organizing the clutter in your email inbox.
  
• Avoid bouncing from one marketing strategy to the next.
• ONLY buy products related or are aligned with the marketing strategy you committed to getting good at!

Okay, now that you’ve answered these 4 questions I sincerely believe you’ve just defeated the overwhelm in internet marketing. Pick ONE specific thing you’re committed to doing that you know will enjoy teaching other people. Notice I didn’t say “pick one thing you are interested in doing…” In this internet marketing game you’ve got to make a decision and commit to it.

First thing to do is open up CamStudio. You will find it wherever you saved it when you installed it. At the time of writing this post the interface of the newest version looks like this:

Let’s go through each of the settings step-by-step on the menu bar. The first one is the FILE menu and it’s the most self-explanatory one of all. “Record” is to start recording, “Pause” is to pause your recording, “Stop” is to stop your recording, and “Exit” is to exit CamStudio.

The next part of the menu bar is the REGION menu. Before you start recording you will need to decide on the type of region you want to record on your screen. There are four region options (“Region”, “Fixed Region”, “Window”, and “Full Screen”)

Region – Select any portion of the screen or the entire desktop for recording. For example, if you only want to record the top upper-left of your computer screen you can set it to record only that part. (Note: Go to Options on the menu bar and be sure that “Enable Autopan” is UNchecked. You will learn what the “Autopan” feature is for down below in this post.)

Fixed Region – This basically works the same way as “Region” except you can preset the the size of the area you want to record. Set the width and height. If you want to enable the autopan feature, go to Options on the menu bar and check “Enable Autopan”.

Window – To record only what is inside of a window on a page, select”Window”. For example, if you are on a webpage and you don’t want the menu options (the top part of the webpage) to be a part of your recording, or if you are on a word document but don’t want the menu options of the word doc to be recorded (you only want the actual word doc page), select this region option.

Full Screen – This is straight forward. If you want to record the entire screen, from corner to corner choose this.

On to OPTIONS, “Video Options…” (first image below). In this section you will need to install CamStudio Lossless Codec v1.5 (or whatever the latest version is -at the time of writing this post the version is v1.5).

The codec is an audio compression program that compresses the audio portion of your video into a smaller size so it doesn’t create a large movie file. Go to http://camstudio.org/blog/camstudio-lossless-codec-v14-released to install the Camstudio Lossless Codec. Scroll down the page until you see CamStudio 1.4 Codec – EXE Installer.

After you click on that, click “Save File” and then follow through until you see the “Finish” portion of the install. ====(It’s a similar install process as the the install for CamStudio itself if you remember.) Go back to the previous post here to see the install process.

==== On the second image below it shows that I set the Compressor to “CamStudio Lossless Codec v1.5″. Note that by default (that means if you do not have the codec installed) you will see the settings on “Microsoft Video 1″.

Once you install the codec, you will have it as an option on the drop-down menu just as you see in the second image right below here. Staying with the second image, notice the settings as the following numbers:

Set Key Frames Every 200 Frames Capture Frames Every 5 milliseconds Playback rate 200 frames/second

Next we’ll look at cursor options. Go to OPTIONS > “Cursor Options” (see first image below). Play around with the settings here. Have fun! It’s straight forward and clear. One thing you must do in order to select the cursor shape and color is to tick the box that says “Highlight Cursor”. (See second image below.)

Let’s go to OPTIONS > “Audio Options”.  Whether you plan on recording the audio portion of your videos via microphone or through the audio speakers of your computer, here is where you go to make adjustments on those options.

An “Audio Options for Microphone/Speakers” will pop up. Make your audio adjustments there. (I personally use and recommend recording your screen capture videos with a microphone. It produces for better clarity on the audio. I bought a Platronics Audio 626 DSP headset with mic that was inexpensive – around $30.

When you need to record ONLY the screen (no audio), select “Do not record audio” under OPTIONS. This means that you will not be recording the sounds in your surroundings (people talking, music in the background, etc. ONLY the screen will be recorded).

To record what you are saying through your microphone, select “Record audio from microphone”. If you want to record sounds coming from your speakers, choose “Record audio from speakers” found under OPTIONS.

There is a feature called “Autopan” which enables you to record wherever your mouse cursor moves. Some people find this feature irritating since the screen being recorded moves anywhere the mouse cursor moves.

Staying with the OPTIONS menu, slide down to “Program Options” and you will see the first that the first 3 options are as follows:

Minimize program on start recording – Selecting this means that when you start your recording, the CamStudio interface will hide. If you do not select this, the entire interface will be displayed on your screen and will be part of what’s being recorded. You decide if you want to choose the interface to be displayed or not.

Hide flashing rectangle during recording – When you hit the record button, you will have the option to see a flashing rectangle around what is being recorded. This rectangle is a guide of what’s being recorded on your screen. Do not select this if you do not want it to show.

Save settings on exit – When you make a change on the settings, you can have those settings saved if you select this option.

You can view the interface as “NormalView”, “Compact View”, or “Buttons View” under the VIEW menu. OR you can simply click on the toggle button (see the icon circled in the image below).

And of course, if you need any help with using CamStudio, go the the HELP menu and you will see that you can visit the “CamStudio Homepage”, “CamStudio Blog”, or go to the “CamStudio FAQ”.

Here are your step-by-step instructions on how to install CamStudio (video screen capture) software and the best part is it’s not gonna cost you a penny, yep it’s free! I have been asked many times before which software I use to record my screen capture videos.  So here goes!

STEP #1 Go to http://CamStudio.org – you should land on a page that looks like this…

STEP #2  Scroll down the page until you see a bunch of links. Click on the first link.

STEP #3 On the next page click on the link that says “Download CamStudio 2.6b (4.5 MB)”.

STEP #4 You will see a countdown box at the top of this next page (first image box below). The box will read “Your CamStudio – Desktop Screen Recorder download will start in x seconds…” The countdown happens quickly (around 5 seconds). Immediately after, you will get a pop up box (second image box below). Click on “Save File”.

STEP #5   You will now see the following image…

STEP #6 Once the progress bar is completed, this next box will pop up…

STEP #7 Immediately you will see an OPEN FILE – SECURITY WARNING pop up box. Click on “Run”.

STEP #8 The next pop up box will have two options (CANCEL & ALLOW). Click on “Allow”

STEP #9 Then click on “Next”

STEP #10 Select “I accept the agreement”, and then click on “Next”

Something important I didn’t mention about Facebook events (at least at the time I am writing this post) is they do not have an option for us to set our event times for a specific time zone, which I hope they add real soon because this usually creates confusion for people you are inviting to your event. What I do is I list (inside of the description of the event) the different time zones that my event is taking place. And I list these time zones at the very top of my description so people can see it right off the bat. So it looks something like this…

PST – Tuesday, September 20 @7pm
EST – Tuesday, September 20 @10pm
Guam – Wednesday, September 21 @12pm
Australia – Wednesday, September 21 @12pm

My biggest breakthrough is discovering personal development and adding it into my life. It has allowed me to shift my thoughts and my energy into a more positive zone, which is being more productive and proactive. Instead of constantly wasting time, experiencing negative emotions, and  having reactions that typically turn people into fans of the blame game and infecting themselves with the unfortunate finger pointing syndrome, I choose to plug more value into Me.

The best part about being on the path of personal development has to be this…

Those that I have guided need NOT my diection or comfort any longer.

When I sleep at night I know that I’ve nurtured others and they are where they wanna be in their lives. Now, tell me that’s not fulfilment!

So that’s it, personal development has amplified my outlook in my life and my business. It has definitely been my biggest breakthrough yet! Thanks so much Daegan for having me reflect on what my biggest breakthrough has been from the last 12 months of my life.

What do you think is the #1 way to be successful in your life and in business, and what does scarcity and abundance have to do with any of that?

"There's not enough, more is better, that's just the way things are", (do nothing else but complain instead of finding ways to  make things better and improve the situation) = Scarcity. Constantly watching the news and is easily influenced by "the sky is falling mentality". = Scarcity.

Expects the government to take care of them, loves to play the role of the victim, keeps helpful secrets to themselves (because they only want the success to go to them and nobody else), is creative at finding ways to  bring people to court, constantly cutting out coupons to save cash instead of finding ways to actually make more money, feel entitled to get paid more than anyone else because they earned a college degree, gossiping and always find things to bash their "competition to feel better about themselves" = Scarcity!

Scarcity

Coming from a place of Scarcity ruins not only the way you see things, but also destroys the way you view your life, as well as disfigures HOW you accept the parts of your life that are not in your favor. Seriously, this is not a healthy way to think as I'm sure you would agree. Abundance

What is the big deal with abundance? Thinking in the form of abundance is the difference between those who are successful and those who are not successful. Simple and self-explanatory. 'Nuff said. Those who choose to think with abundance are completely fine and even willing to give their little known secrets away because they they are fully aware there's always gonna be more secrets in the making.

They give compliments instead of battle with wordy bashes when they receive negative remarks from their competition. If something bad happens to them they make fun out of it (probably will post about it on Facebook). Abundance people never watch the news, don't whine or complain, does not react but stays proactive instead. And if opportunities close they know another door will open up for them. OF COURSE, they hang out with people just like them.

The attitudes we give out to others on a daily basis determines what we get back from them as I'm sure you would agree. Depending on what how we choose to handle situations and how we perceive events will determine whether or not we will succeed in life (more or less).

So, it makes sense then that if we opt for poor and negative behavior as opposed to a owning a positive mental attitude, we're pretty much guaranteed to capture the same sort of crappy opinions and perspectives from the people and events around us. It's NOT rocket science.
