Private Mentoring

I want you to reflect on something for a moment and think of all the successful people you can think of; celebrities and non-celebrities alike. What is the one thing that they all have in common: a mentor. Virtually every one of those successful beings in our history had someone who they learned from and looked up to, especially when times were tough. This is why I am going to highlight the importance of having a mentor in business and entrepreneurship.

Everyone desires to have success in their lives and in that nature it is indispensable to have a leader, a mentor, a coach, someone with more familiarity than you and who is in a point in their life that you aspire to be in all your opportunities.

One of the biggest reasons for failure in a business is the fact that majority of people underestimate the value, the importance and significance of reaching out to and having a mentor. A mentor offers priceless insight to things that only our experience can teach us. There are so many other things besides that. In fact, there are a host of other things where a mentor will do you Good.

Let me introduce another question: Would you not agree that having someone right beside you that has gone through the motions, traveled the path, and is willing and eager to steer you in the right direction can significantly minimize your learning curve, helping you to accomplish your goals much, much quicker versus if you were to do it blindly all by your lonesome self?

Picture yourself going hiking on a trail you’ve never been on without a map, a compass, or guides to help you get to your destination. All you have are the best new pair of hiking shoes (which in this case would be your high internet speed of 7 mbps). Yes you will always have choices. And in this instance you were given two choices to get through the trail to complete it.

Your first choice: Get through the trail all by yourself with your brand new hiking shoes.

Your second choice: Team up with an experienced and skilled trekker, who has been through the exact trail lots of times before and can possibly do it blindfolded, guide you and show you how to get to the end of the trail.

Don’t get this analogy? Well, try this one:

Imagine buying some piece of furniture and trying to assemble it when the instructions that come with it are in a different language than yours. I’m sure now you can identify with what I’m enlightening you with.

So with that, I wanna share with you some of the many reasons why a mentor will do you good.

Encouragement and Support for You

Basically what it boils down to is that a mentor will be there with you whenever you need someone to help you get through all the ugly yucky stuff. When you’re feeling low a mentor will encourage you to keep on running the marathon. A good mentor will provide encouragement, which literally means “to give courage”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that there are no other persons out there whom cannot offer you encouragement but more importantly is that when it is coming from someone who knows and understands your business inside out it means even that much more.

Decrease Your Learning Curve and Reduce Your Mistakes

Having a good mentor means they will help you in preventing the mistakes that you otherwise would have no way of steering clear of. In life there are only two ways to gain wisdom: by making your own mistakes, or learning from others’ mistakes. And if you’re contemplating about trekking through the path without a map, you probably won’t follow that path that leads you to where there’s a group of lost hikers. A mentor already has made all the mistakes for you so you don’t have to make the same ones all over again. And failure is only possible if you quit or if you decide to figure out everything on your own. I say the latter simply to press upon you that you don’t have enough time to make all the mistakes you need to make in order to be successful.

Eradicate Your Weaknesses

A mentor will help you to eliminate your weak points. This involves trimming off some of the things that are holding you back in making your business thrive. It’s fundamental to note that around this point it is the time to realize that you may not always enjoy their “presence”. Their major role is to be your mentor and then secondarily your friend. With that said your best friend’s see you as you are but your mentor sees you for whom you can become.

Tolerating your weaknesses is the job of your friends but your mentor will eliminate them altogether. This is because your friends are comfortable with your past as well as your plans in general. What your mentor will do is teach you to fall in love with growth and to be comfortable with what is in store for you in your successful future.

Bring Out Your Strengths

Remember that Michael Jordan had a coach. Most people when asked if they had a choice of being coached in basketball by Michael Jordan himself or his coach who they would chose. Almost unanimously they say they would prefer Michael Jordan. Who would you select? The truth however is that it takes a certain sort of person to reveal the talent and ability undeveloped in people. Talent cannot be taught which is why coaches are more valuable and priceless than their players are. Without good coaches, talent would be hopeless. An excellent mentor will help bring out the finest in you when you don’t necessarily see the qualities you truly had in you all along.

Honesty for You

If you didn’t already guess, a mentor will not sugar coat the truth because their primary intention is to ensure you are first and foremost, Successful. They will tell you what you NEED to hear. And just for the record a good mentor understands that a moment of strain and pressure is better than a lifetime of regret and unhappiness. And that is why they will always be honest and upfront with you instead of allowing you to believe that you’ve arrived at your destination.
